Indications
Excessive grooming/chewing associated with chronic dermatitis
Administration :
Dosage (Dog) 2 mg/kg PO q 12h
Duration As clinically necessary (2 weeks in 1 study)
Expected Effects
Significant reduction in pruritus, based on owner observations (placebo-controlled, double-blinded).

Precautions
Contraindications : Hypersensitivity to the drug, Purposeful cough (e.g., pneumonia)
Pearls
Anecdotal use for cough suppression in dogs and cats: 1-2 mg/kg PO q 8-12h
Historically considered only for its antitussive properties; now recognized to have central nervous system effects that may produce analgesia and/or behavior modification (and the potential for human abuse of the drug)
