Therapeutics

Interactions

Compatible with 5% dextrose (for infusion) - do not use other fluid types
Avoid concurrent administration with other drugs that have nephrotoxic potential (e.g., aminoglycoside antibacterials) or that can foster prerenal azotemia (e.g., diuretics)
Rare hypokalemia

Hypersensitivity to the drug

Adverse Side Effects

Nephrotoxicosis is rare at 4 mg/kg q 24h and appears much less severe than with standard amphotericin B

Pearls

Infuse only with 5% dextrose (be sure to pre-flush IV lines with 5% dextrose before starting infusion); other fluids may cause precipitation of the drug
Diluted in 5% dextrose to 1 mg/mL each dose before giving as IV infusion
For blastomycosis, largely replaced by oral azoles (itraconazole, fluconazole for central nervous system, eye) unless unable to swallow or urgent/immediate intervention needed
Many dogs treated with this dosage for other systemic mycoses including histoplasmosis and coccidioidomycosis
